Juan’s story merges with clay in the 1970s, when, at the age of only 12, he becomes the “errand boy” of one of the most important art schools in the province. He arrived every day by bicycle to Purullena (Guadix), to be interested in learning the trade, until the master potter of the time accepted him as a student.
Today Juan is already an expert craftsman, with his own workshop in Guadix, where he works with great skill in ceramics, sculpture and painting. Its pottery pieces are unique, handmade following the most artisanal and atavistic techniques of the region.
The rise of pottery in this area is due, to a great extent, to the richness of the clays in the terrain. Being such a ductile, abundant and easy to extract material, historically the manufacture of clay objects has been constant, contributing to characterize the culture and heritage of the region of Guadix.
The ceramic pieces that Juan creates are for both domestic and decorative use. Plates, glasses, pots, dishes, bowls, jugs, pitchers… authentic evidence of a tradition that dates back to the 16th century and of a craft that should not be lost.
